This photo shows a loft with only a 100mm depth of loft insulation.

While this was deemed sufficient a number of years ago, it does not meet current guidelines on how to keep your home as warm as possible.

It should look like this!

Since 2003, current building regulations recommend a depth of at least 270mm.

Benefits to upgrading your loft insulation

Energy Bills

Loft insulation can help you save hundreds of pounds each year. This directly applies to your energy bills.  And with loft insulation having a long life span it will pay for itself many times over. By preventing heat loss loft insulation contributes to lower energy consumption. As a result, homeowners often experience significant cost savings on their energy bills.

Preventing Heat Loss

It is estimated that around a quarter of a home’s heat is lost through its roof if there is no loft insulation in place. By insulating your loft you minimise this heat loss by creating a thermal barrier,  preventing heat from rising and disappearing through your roof.

Adequate loft insulation helps maintain a more consistent and comfortable indoor temperature throughout the year.

Create an Environmentally Friendly Home

  • Reducing carbon dioxide emissions by lowering energy consumption.
  • Significant reduction in the home’s carbon footprint, enhancing environmental friendliness.
  • Importance of loft insulation as a key element for a well-insulated home.
  • Loft insulation acts as a barrier to prevent heat loss in winter and maintain cooler temperatures in summer.
  • Leads to reduced reliance on heating and cooling systems.
  • Results in lower energy bills and increased overall energy efficiency.

Things to consider

Ventilation

Insulation prevents heat escaping from living spaces, so it will make your loft space cooler, which could introduce or worsen existing damp or condensation problems. With this in mind, we will assess the ventilation in your loft space and can recommend products or steps to ensure there is adequate ventilation. These include -

  • 'Lap Vents' - These are installed if your roof isn't fitted with a breathable membrane. They are placed in the joins of your non-breathable membrane to open up gaps to allow for the air to pass in and out of the loft.
  • Eaves - We ensure that there is a sufficient gap between the insulation and roof. This will allow the air to travel between the loft and outside at the gutter level. We recommend your soffits have ventilation.

Storage

If you currently have belongings in your loft that you want to keep safe and out of the way, these MUST be kept above the insulation. This is not only to protect your items becoming dusty or worse damp (see above to avoid this!) but is mainly to protect the insulation.

By squashing the insulation with belongings or loose boards for them to sit on, you are increasing the risk of condensation and reducing the performance of the insulation material.

To avoid this, we offer a raised loft boarding system. This is a system that is designed to be strong and allows for access underneath if needed. We use a BBA approved product.

The Loft Hatch!!

Something that tends to get forgotten is the loft hatch itself. This is permanent opening in your ceiling so has more potential to allow heat to escape the house.

We will always ensure the hatch is sufficiently insulated and importantly sealed to prevent a draft.

We offer options to upgrade your loft hatch and even loft ladders if you feel access is needed or not safe enough.
